Rick Hillis is president of, and one of the founders of One hero at A Time, and part Wheelcharier program. He also a member of the board of th Veterans Transition Resource Center, Las Vegas, and regularly appears on their radio broadcasts. He is a medically retired veteran, injured by an explosion in the aftermath of the Gulf War, who views his disabilities, as special abilities.
Rick was in a serious accident on 11/16/2018, while on his way to Colorado to speak at a veteran’s event, about One hero at a Time and the Wheelcharier program. His injuries were substantial and included fractures of the T7 vertebra and the transverse process of L1, L2, L3, the ulna of his left wrist, left ribs, and sternum. He had left lung atelectasis, and it was discovered that he had two major underlying medical conditions, likely a result of his previous military injuries, that must be treated over the next few months.
Rick owns his own motorcycle shop and he is a key to the mission of One Hero at a Time. Anyone who knows Ricks, knows that he puts every penny he earns into assisting and honoring catastrophically injured veterans from all branches of the service, but he never tells anyone, and he wants nothing in return except for disabled veterans to live life well, know that we honor their sacrifices, and to end veteran suicides. He has been known to ride 1000 miles in a day to visit and sit with a veteran, who just needed a brother to be there. Rick spends his life on others, and never asks for anything return, and in fact, he has opposed this fund-raising campaign, “because there are more important people who need help”.
He has dedicated his life, to helping veterans, one on one, and he will not be deterred from his mission. Even as injured as he is, he stays in contact, and will receive any call, at any time, from any veteran. He receives no money, and would refuse any money from, One hero at a Time and considers it a privilege to serve in capacity he does.
Because of his injuries, Ricks ability to work is very limited. He can work just few hours a day and then he must lay down and rest for most of the day. He lives in an apartment in his shop. He is behind on his work, and because of this he is danger of losing his shop, and his home. His expenses and operating costs are paid through the first of January, and it is unlikely he will complete enough work, to even cover the rent for at least two, possibly three months. His monthly costs are about $5000 a month. He will lose his business and his home, if we cannot raise the funds to cover the costs while he is convalescing.
Please help us support Rick Hillis, a true American hero, who has supported so many, by donating to this fundraiser. Any money raised in excess of Rick's needs will be used to support the mission of One hero at a Time, and honor our nation's catastrophically injured veteran, one hero at a time.
When I set this this campaign up I failed to make clear that the Veterans Transition Resource Center is handling all the funds of this campaign, for tax purposes, to the benefit of those donating, and all funds are to the benefit Rick Hillis. If after his needs are met, a few months from now, and there is any money left over, and only after all Rick's needs are met, the money will roll into the One Hero at a Time operations fund, which is the fund that is used to cover expenses of a One hero at Time event, and will be used to cover, only the absolutely necessary expenses to produce an event. No money ever raised at an event ever goes into this fund, and this fund is managed by VTRC. Silent donors give to the fund to help cover the costs that may come up while producing an event with the complexity of an OHAAT event. This is not a fundraiser for OHAAT. Up front, I doubt there will be any money left over, and the purpose of this fundraiser is to assist Rick in his recovery and save his business while he heals. Anyone who knows Rick, knows he gives everything he makes to OHAAT, and the veterans he assists, that's why we are giving back to him.
