Hello Friends and Family,
Charneice and I have been selected as delegates with Code Pink, a non-profit activist organization, to travel to Cuba.
While in Cuba we will meet with government officials about US-Cuba relations, look at Cuba's changing economy moving away from state-run enterprises to cooperatives, talk to doctors from around the world being trained in Cuba, visit cooperative farms, take day trips outside Havana, and interact with local people about arts and cultural, economic, education, environmental, and health issues.
We have been selected as educators/artists and will be using photography and storytelling to create a story photo book, called “The Stories We Tell Our Children”. I will also have an installation and exhibit the photos from this trip when we return from Cuba in June, at The Den, inside the Anacostia Arts Center. We have pitched the book idea to a small press and plan to publish the book in the Spring of 2017.
In addition to this, as Charneice builds the infrastructure for the international High School 48 Hour Film Project in Washington DC she hopes to spark the conversation of bringing the teaching artist experience and The High School 48 Hour Film Project to Cuba so that their young people can share their stories through film and connect to the many filmmakers around the world who participate in The 48 Hour Film Project each year.
This trip is important to us as Charneice and I begin to build our arts education program centered around young people telling their own stories from their perspectives. Being able to travel to Cuba as a delegate and speak with individuals who can help our work progress to an international stage is the best step we can make in this direction.
While Charneice did receive a small scholarship through Code Pink, and we have already paid for a portion of this trip, we still need to raise at minimum $2700 to make this trip possible. Any help you can lend would be great and all contributions over $50 will receive one print from the collection. Contributions of $100 will receive the book and one print from the collection.
Our trip is April 27-May 3 . We will need to end the GOFUND SOON to meet our deadlines.
We sincerely appreciate your support.
