One year ago on 4/20/22, our dear friend Richard was diagnosed with Squamous Cell Carcinoma in the floor of his mouth. As all who know him, Rich is a fighter! After a brave but brutal one year battle against this aggressive cancer (including surgery to remove the tumor followed by chemoradiation), we are happy to report that Rich recently received NED (No Evidence of Disease) from his oncology team at UCSF. However, his fight is not over! Richard just received the devastating news that the radiation not only killed the cancer but has attacked his jawbone resulting in osteoradionecrosis (ORN). ORN is a severe iatronic disease resulting in a chronic state of injured bone tissue with inadequate healing of the mandible. He is starting an 8-week hyberbaric oxygen protocol mid-April with the hopes of slowing down any further deterioration of his teeth and jaw. Treating diagnosed ORN also requires surgical intervention as the non-viable bone will need to be removed. As our friend faces another battle, we would like to support him by donating funds to help with mounting medical bills and unexpected expenses. While Richard continues to work in the construction field, he is weak from the ongoing infection in his mouth and unable to return to work full-time.
