Thursday, September 5, 2019, Retired Cayuga County Sheriff's Office Custody Officer, Richard Thomson, intervened in a domestic violence situation and defended two women who were being assaulted. He used his training to mediate and get the women to safety, then used himself as a barricade and was viciously attacked. He suffered a severe brain injury and had to be airlifted to Albany Medical Center, where he has been in critical condition since. He has undergone many procedures, scans, and tests with his faithful wife, Marcia by his side. There have been many complications which have compounded his recovery. We are optimistic that he will keep fighting through them. In the past few days, he has shown tremendous growth and is now breathing on his own and attempting to verbalize and answer questions! The doctors are happy with his progress in the past few days but have shared that it will be a long and grueling recovery. He has already accumulated many medical bills and will be sure to have many more. Also, he will need to transfer to a rehabilitation hospital after he is released. When he is eventually able to come home, adaptations will likely need to be made. Many people have asked how they can help or if there are any expenses they can cover. My sister Brooke and I have decided to begin a fundraiser to help support our parents through this difficult time. Thank you for all of your continued support and prayers. Please feel free to leave comments as well, because my mother will enjoy reading them to him.
