Update: Federal appeals court upholds $400k penalty against attorney who disclosed priest's abuse
There are several living child sexual predators within the Archdiocese of New Orleans. Many people looked the other way while a certain predator-priest was walking freely among children. Not Attorney Richard Trahant. Attorney Trahant is one of the loudest voices for innocent children and survivors. The Archdiocese of New Orleans and the Federal Bankruptcy Court has silenced these voices by sealing many documents and placing them under a protective order, which only protects child predators and their enablers, not children and sexual abuse survivors. Although Mr. Trahant firmly believes he did not violate any court order, he also believes that attorneys have an ethical, legal, and moral duty to report abuse and neglect of children. The $400,000 sanction by the Bankruptcy Court is improper, wrong, and unfathomable. Any order or court should not allow hidden documentation of known sexual predators. Parents, grandparents and those who care about the safety of children have a right to know when their children are in harm’s way. Courts and laws should not keep that information from the public.
