Richard Smith Memorial at Doraville Rec Center
The cornerstone of the Smith family, Richard Smith Sr., passed away on August 14th, 2021. He was loved, respected, and admired by practically anyone who had the opportunity to meet him. A lifelong coach, he loved sports, especially for young people; he truly believed in the lessons that youths can learn from playing any sport, and understood that the profession of coaching involved so much more than just running practices and games. As he always told his players, it's not just about the "what", but they "why".
The largest portion of his coaching career was spent at the Doraville Recreation Center, guiding countless young people down their first steps toward becoming competitive athletes. His career at Doraville began in 1981, and spanned at least the next 22 years. He coached basketball, football, and baseball at the Rec Center and Honeysuckle Park next door. He even returned as a fan when his children played at Doraville Rec in adult basketball leagues. This was a full circle moment for him, as he, too, played in many leagues on the very same court. Coach Smith was woven into the very fabric of Doraville Rec, participating in countless championships and national tournaments. He and his wife Allison were even able to coach together at this location, and all three of his children grew up playing together there as well.
He would be so pleased to be able to give back to this facility that brought him so much joy. There was one point in our lives where all 5 members of the Smith family were there practically every night of the week! In lieu of sending gifts and flowers, we ask that you donate here in his name. On August 27th, we will be presenting Doraville Rec Center with the full amount raised, to help renovate facilities and continue the important work of engaging young people in sport. God bless you all, and thank you for being a part of Coach Smith's life!
