Honoring Richard Downes: Supporting Alzheimer’s Society

Honoring Richard Downes: Supporting Alzheimer’s Society
"An old-school, chivalrous gentleman with a heart of gold, a mischievous smile, and an unwavering love for his family."

These are just some of the words that describe my beloved father, Richard Thomas Downes. Born on May 21, 1946, he lived a life full of love, laughter, and generosity. Richard, a devoted husband, father, grandfather, friend, and neighbor, touched so many's lives with his kindness and quiet strength.

For over 50 years, he shared a beautiful life with Sue, the love of his life. Together, they built a home filled with warmth and cherished memories. Whether hosting neighborhood BBQs, teaching us the value of hard work, or dancing the jive to Jailhouse Rock, Dad embodied the best of what it means to live fully and love deeply.

In August 2020, Richard was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s, a cruel disease that slowly took pieces of the man we adored. Despite its challenges, Dad faced this journey with the same quiet dignity that defined his life. On November 8, 2024, surrounded by his family, he passed away peacefully, leaving behind a legacy of love and cherished memories.

Alzheimer’s is a disease that affects not just individuals but entire families. We’ve experienced firsthand the emotional and physical toll it takes, but we’ve also seen the incredible impact of organizations like the Alzheimer’s Society. Their work provides vital support for families and funds groundbreaking research into treatments and a potential cure.

In honor of Dad’s life, we’re raising funds for the Alzheimer’s Society, so that other families can have the support they need and hope for a brighter future.

Your contributions will go directly toward:

  • Supporting families living with Alzheimer’s through counseling and resources.
  • Funding research to understand, treat, and one day cure this disease.

Every donation, no matter the size, is a step toward making a difference. If you’re unable to donate, sharing this campaign means the world to us and helps spread awareness.

We will miss Dad more than words can ever express, but we take comfort in knowing that his memory can inspire change and bring hope to others.

Thank you for your kindness and support.

With love,
Sue, Simon, Drew, and Family
