Cordillera Strong: Help Rebuild the historic rice terraces of the Philippines one farmer at a time

The historic terrace areas of the Philippine Cordillera are reeling from successive typhoons.

In mid-September, the province of Benguet was hit by Typhoon Ompong ( Mangkhut.)  That was followed on October 30, 2018 by Typhoon Rosita (Yutu). Weakening from a super typhoon that devastated Guam and Saipan, Typhoon Rosita inflicted heavy damage on northern Luzon’s Cordillera Mountains.  The municipalities of Balig and Natonin in Mountain Province and Tanudan in Kalinga Province, which are part of the high-elevation watershed area of the Tanudan River, were hit the hardest.

Although the mountains are forest- covered, the area received more than 2 feet of rain at the very highest elevations which caused flash floods and mudslides below. Excess water flowed through and over the rice terraces, washing out the stone and mud walls. Tributary creeks and rivers became raging torrents that scoured the valleys and washed away the footpaths and irrigation canals which follow the valley contours.

With your help, the Cordillera Heirloom Rice Project of Eighth Wonder and the Philippine NGO RICE, Inc can get immediate financial assistance to some of the most affected farmers, who must repair their terraces before they can plant their crops. The Cordillera Heirloom Rice Project has a successful track record for helping individual farmers and communities restore terraces. Since 2011, our Adopt-a-Terrace project has distributed over 100 grants to farmers and communities; and over 11 hectares of abandoned and damaged terraces have been repaired.

As the Philippine government begins the massive job of clearing the roads and restoring damaged infrastructure, local farmers will start the task of rebuilding their individual terraces. With the help of this GoFundMe campaign, the Adopt-A-Terrace project will focus on terrace rehabilitation efforts in newly affected areas. It is our hope that some of the damaged fields can be repaired in time for planting season, which begins in January and February. If assistance does not come in a timely manner, the impact will be devastating to the remote communities of the Cordillera.

The money raised through this site will be distributed in the form of small grants to individual farmers by the Philippine NGO RICE, Inc.  The grants will be used to help farmers cover the costs associated with hiring additional labor to repair terrace walls and clear debris from paddies. Municipal and provincial officials have already supplied RICE, Inc. with names of farmers most affected.

We cannot let the heirloom rice terraces of the Cordillera be lost forever.  Cordillera Strong: Help rebuild the historic rice terraces of the Philippines.
