RI People's History Museum

We're raising funds for an exciting new museum that will be opening in May in Peace Dale, Rhode Island!

From indigenous resistance, to the burning of the Gaspee, to the Stop & Shop strike of 2019, Rhode Island has a captivating history of struggle. The RI People's History Museum will tell the story of our state through historical artifacts and the lived experiences of working people.  We will provide opportunities for visitors  to learn about, be inspired by, and get involved in ideas worth fighting for.  As we prepare to open our doors, we ask you to be part of this important effort.

The Zinn Education Project perfectly explains the value of People’s History.   “A people’s history flips the script. When we look at history from the standpoint of the workers and not just the owners, the soldiers and not just the generals, the invaded and not just the invaders, we can begin to see society more fully, more accurately. The more clearly we see the past, the more clearly we’ll see the present — and be equipped to improve it.”

Our goal is to bring this perspective to South County.  We want to be a space where students can come learn and think critically about our shared history.  The RIPHM will provide exhibits, presentations, and hands on experiences from the perspectives of labor, people of color, immigrants, and women.   Among our first exhibits will be:
        * The Revolutionary Union of the 1970’s
        * Reproductive Rights in RI
        * Standing Together at Brown and Sharpe, the story of America's longest strike.

Many of the exhibits and labor will be donated at first, so our biggest need right now is rent! As we grow, donations will be used to bring in new exhibits and guest speakers, and hire staff to help with educational outreach and curating.

Every contribution is greatly appreciated!  We are so proud to be part of the RI, SK, and Peace Dale communities and hope you'll help us make this community stronger by supporting this effort.
