This little miracle was born on July 24, 2014. It was love at first sight for both parents (myself and Mandy Barnhart). We tried for 3 years to have this little man. We were prepared, prepped, and ready for all the responsibilities and expenses that come with having a child.
What we weren't ready for was a non breathing and 24 hour seizure episode baby. He spent 24 hours at Dupont Hospital's NICU and at that time it was decided to send him to Riley's Children Hospital where we spent the next 3 weeks. We were blessed to be able to take him home without a ventilator, no feeding tube, and just anti-seizure medicine.
Looking at this bundle of joy you wouldn't expect him to be heavily brain damaged. The beautiful thing about a baby's brain is it has the ability to rewire itself unlike a fully mature adult brain, essentially he was going thru what an adult stroke victim would experience. The picture of Rhys Jr with his favorite friend the Octopus speaks loudly of how far this miracle has come and hopefully a bright future ahead of him.
What we have been left with is thousands in medical bills due now and there will be several additional checkups in the near future. They are adding up and this is nothing anyone could have prepared us for. I have never been one to ask for help but sometimes we need to set aside our pride and reach out to the ones we love.
We will forever be indebted to Riley Hospital and all the people that have made it possible to bring this angel home. All money donated will be used to pay any/all of Rhys Jr.'s medical bills. If you aren't able to donate we just ask that you pass the message along!
