New Used Van

Hi my name is Carmen Myers and I have a disability called Arthrogryposis Multiplex Congenita (AMC) I am wheelchair bound. I am raising money through Go fund Me because I need a wheelchair accessible van that I am able to drive myself.  For years I have maintained my independence through being able to transport myself and others to appointments, run errands and generally go about day to day life. 

About 7 months ago, my vehicle lift fell apart and is no longer functional.  Because the van is 18 years old, the company that provides the adaptations told me they were not able to fix the lift, because the van is too old and dangerous. 

I tried to hold on to it as long as I could, It was dear to me, especially because my husband Robert (who was also wheelchair bound due to spinal cord injury) passed away in 2013 and he was the one who had secured a grant to buy the van for us. 

Since losing my husband things have been very difficult.  I have tried to manage continuing to run a handicap bowling league which my late husband and I founded in East Hartford in 1995.  Its now named after him the “Robert J Myers Memorial League.  This league was such a big part of our lives, and its now difficult to manage without my own transportation.

I have a number of health issues in addition to being wheelchair bound.  I suffer from COPD and also had severe accident years ago where I suffered 3rd degree burns on my feet and legs, as a result I have numerous Dr. Appointments to attend to manage my health.  Having a new vehicle would mean everything to me, I’d be able to hold on to my independence, bring myself to medical appointments, and most importantly visit and connect with my friends and family again. 

Many of my friends are also wheelchair bound and some are confined to nursing homes and managing their own health problems. .I used to use my old van to bring my pugs(who are my children) to visit them. I could help them by bringing them things they need, and sharing a little bit of myself and my love and time with them.  I feel fulfilled when I am able to help others, and I don’t take any of the gifts I have been given in life for granted.  I am always looking for ways to bring joy to others.  Just know that if you are able to donate anything, I will be forever grateful and never forget your generosity.
