What a human being.
Helene, who along with her husband Murdo, has given so much of herself to preserve and protect the wildlife--and especially the bird life--around us, needs our help.
You know how cancer is: it's indiscriminate, like war, or a gluten allergy. It's not like Santa Claus: it doesn't care if you've been bad or good. And for goodness sake, Helene's been gooder than most.
Anyway, what with the brutal effects of cancer treatment, our friend Helene needs a couple of renos to her home so she can stay in it as long as possible. Stay in it, and stay close to the clinic, where she can still provide guidance to her staff and treatment to eagles and jays and turtles and such, to the extent she is able.
I guarantee you, it's more than I would be doing in her shoes. I would be like, to blazes with this, I'm charging a down payment for a Ferrari on my credit card and driving to Argentina, good luck getting it back.
Well, I guess not. Helene is so inspiring that I guess I would have to pull myself together and make every minute count, just like she is doing.
Now this gofundme business is not a registered charity, so you won't get a tax break, but you WILL get a break from thinking about whatever is currently bedeviling you to think about Helene, and what a marvelous person she is, and how much she deserves a low-barrier shower, among other small but important enhancements.

1. I am a lawyer age 36 father of 3 and employed by a Crown corporation.
2. I am from Truro, the regional center adjacent to Helene and Murdo's home. Recently I relocated for work to the National Capital Region.
3. I am a friend of Helene van Doninck and her husband Murdo Messer. I have served on two non-profit boards with Helene and have known her since 2012.
4. Funds raised here will be used to construct accommodations to the van Doninck/ Messer home or in such other way as necessary to support Helene and Murdo with the impacts of cancer treatment. The funds are being raised with a view to their disbursement and use by Helene and Murdo in the short term as their needs are immediate or imminent.
5. When the campaign ends, donations will be shut off but the story will stay up so that donors can see what has happened with it. I will withdraw the funds to my own account, and then disburse those funds by Interac E-Transfer directly to Helene/Murdo. Both have a view to what has been raised and both are aware of the GoFundMe fees policies, so there will be total transparency as to the amount transferred and certainty that it is the full amount.
