Hi, I'm Jonathan Rudder, author, college professor, and game designer. My brother Doug and I used to operate RudderHaven, a small book publishing concern located in Granite City, IL. While we had a good run in book publishing, it became apparent that we needed our business to grow into something more.
We attempted to add on a game studio through a GoFundMe effort last year, but in the interim we decided our business model just wasn't working for us. At the end of 2018, we shut down RudderHaven and are now working to relaunch and rebrand as RudderHaven Publishing Group PBC. What's the difference, you might ask?
On the surface, not much; however, underneath it is a completely different animal. This new entity will be a Delaware Public Benefit Corporation. This means that not only can we take on shareholders, like any other corporation, we can also declare a public benefit that takes equal precedence when making financial decisions.
Our benefit: to provide an on-ramp into the workforce for current college students, recent graduates, and disenfranchised professionals, who need the invaluable commercial experience we can provide, through internships and temporary contracts. Our goal is to maintain a small, permanent, full-time staff to mentor the interns and contractors in the production of high-quality books and games for commercial release, providing experience and skill development that could dramatically improve their future prospects.
This particular crowdfunding effort is to garner the funds necessary to incorporate the business and set up an office space. We are going to need a lot more in the coming months, but we are trying to keep the initial goal reasonable. After RHPG is established, we'll continue to seek funds through both investment channels and ongoing crowdfunding efforts.
We already have a number of students who are eager to join RHPG in its endeavors, both as potential employees and as vested partners, and over the course of this campaign, I hope to introduce you to some of them.
