As many of you know, my mom, Rhonda, has had endured a painful battle with cancer over the past two and a half years.
It all started when she was having stomach issues, and for more than six months could not figure out what the problem was. She would have her stomach drained of fluid every month, and eventually found out that she had ovarian cancer and peritoneal carcinomatosis (a secondary cancer that affects the lining of the abdominal cavity). She had surgery, a hysterectomy, and a tumor that was attached to the intestine removed. Over the past two years, she has also been on several different chemotherapy treatments. The last chemotherapy treatment she had put her in the hospital for over a week and caused an intestinal blockage.
She and her doctor have made the decision to stop the chemotherapy because it is not improving her quality of life nor is it fighting the cancer cells. As disappointing as it was to hear, we asked her doctor if we could get a second opinion.
This week, we drove her to City of Hope for that second opinion. We were full of hope, as the hospital name implies… but we were told that there was nothing further that they could do for her. A month ago, her doctor told her that she probably had a year left to live — but her quality of life has declined rapidly over the past month. She is unable to keep anything down (foods, liquids, medication), is still having issues from the intestinal blockage, has rapidly lost weight, and is becoming very weak.
My family wants to make her feel as loved and as comfortable as we can for her in these final days. I’ve had an overwhelming amount of friends and family ask how they can help, and have suggested that I set up a Go Fund Me page. So, as difficult as this is for me to do, we would be so humbled — and she would be so grateful — if any contribution could be made, as they would go toward these items:
Co-Payments
Bills
Groceries
Additional items needed through Hospice care
Care-taking/Housekeeping
Experiences to make some final memories
Thank you so much for your help and for your love for my mom and my family.
Jamie
