Hi! My name is Rebecca Akers. I am 27-years-old. I was born with a hereditary blood disease that I was diagnosed with when I was 12. I had surgery to remove my spleen at the age of 19 as a result. When I had surgery the doctor discovered that my liver was severly scarred and took an immediate biopsy. The next day, I had a blood transfusion because I had lost too much blood during surgery, then I was hit with the news that I had level 4/4 Cirrhosis (Liver Disease). The doctors couldn't figure out why my liver was in such bad shape for how young I was, but did inform me that if I did not have a liver transplant within the next 6 months that I wouldn't be alive. A month later I was diagnosed with severe Ulcerative Colitis, which is an autoimmune disease that attacks your colon. They said that my cells were so large that if I didn't get my colon removed I would develop Colon Cancer at an accelerated rate. Well, I'm happy to report that neither of those things have happened, however medical costs have added up over the years and I need help so I can have a fresh start.
I have had a real battle for the last year and a half again. In August of 2013 my liver enzymes reached the 490's and the normal range is 2-30. It made me extremely ill, but out of that we have found the cause of the liver disease. I was tested positive for Autoimmune Hepatitis B. Since then it has been a crazy ride of medications and trying to find what works to keep my liver stable so no transplant is needed.
At the age of 19 my hospital bill alone was over $56,000.00. Add the surgeon bill, anesthesiologist, and other various costs, the total was around $76,000.00. My family did not have insurance at the time. Since then, for continued care, I have had about the equivalent of $100,000.00 in medical debt. At this time I have about $20,000.00 of that left to pay. I am seeking to raise around $30,000.00 because I continually have upkeep treatment costs that are not cheap. For example, this year I will need a colonoscopy, endoscopy, blood tests every 1-2 months, MRI and/or CAT Scan, etc. These are the routine tests, not to mention a Liver Biopsy every few years to really monitor my liver. Furthermore, I also work with a natural doctor. That costs anywhere from $1,000 - $1,500 a month to keep up!
The $30,000.00 would help me pay off my current debt and have a cushion to help with future needs! I would not be apposed to more either! It goes quickly!
I would be enternally grateful for your help. I work at Carbondale Middle School. I love what I do! I have a passion for making a difference in the lives of those who will shape our future! However, it does not pay well. After taxes, I make about $1,250.00 a month. Needless to say, that doesn't cut it! I have often though of getting a new job, the sheer fact that I love what I do makes that difficult, but my co-workers have been more than supportive and understanding through this. Any other job would have kicked me to the curb at this point. I am so grateful for how they have helped me through this time!
Thank you for taking the time to read about my story! I pray that God blesses you with however you would like to participate, whether that be monitary, prayerfully, or by any other means! After all, he gets all the glory for the miracle that I am still here and even able to write such an amazing story!
If you have any other questions for me, please do not hesitate to get a hold of me! I'd love to share more and I'll do my best to answer them!
Bless you all!!!!! <3

Rebecca Akers
