RHKA 2021 "Emergent-Sea"

December 29th 2021 we had devasting flood at our karate dojo. At 3am the RCMP called Sensei Rodney and Coreen saying water is flowing out of the front doors. The water was 3-4inches deep throughout the dojo, so when Sensei opened the door alot of it spilled on to the street. Unfortunately, there is lots that is ruined (stock, baseboards, underlay, flooring, etc). I know they do have insurance, but as we all know ... that is a lengthy process.

The restoration company is doing testing and we will know on December 31 whether we can get in the space in some form for next week's classes or not. We are hoping the damage was reduced enough (thanks to all those who helped) that we can at least use the dojo, or a part of it, for next week. We do have feelers out for alternative locations, should we need them. If anyone has a large space available please let either myself or Sensei Rodney know ~2-4000 sq feet. We still haven't heard back on what the results were for that testing however, we are doing our best to prepare (if we have to) to be relocated for up to 4-6 months. Hope for the best, prepare for the worst.

We had some really AMAZING RHKA members who dropped everything and came to the dojo's aid. There were 20 people at the dojo and within 3 hours we had everything cleaned up. The restoration company said this would have taken his crew 2 days to do what we did. You. Are. Amazing! Those who followed our Facebook/Instagram accounts really helped us with removing the wet stuff, and minimizing what we could of the damages. The amount of community support we recieved that day was overwhleming and humbling (and brought a tear or two to my eyes while I was squeegeeing the stock room).

Now I personally don't feel paticularliy comfortable asking for money. I know Sensei Rodney and Coreen would be the last people to ask for anything as well. So I'm not going to ask. Please don't feel any obligation. Even just your messages of encourgment I know have meant the world to Sensei Rodney and Coreen. However, if you feel you want to do more here is your opportunity: The insurance compay will (hopefully) cover most of the damages. However the deductable is roughly $3500. Not a small sum for a small family run business like RHKA. I know they are working tirelessly aound the clock to try to find the financial resources to cover this hugely unexpected cost and help get us back on our feet. Both Sensei Rod and myself have received MANY messages from our dojo families and surrounding karate community on asking how they can help. For right now, this fundraiser is the best answer we have. If you have the availablity to contribute to this campaign I know everyone at RHKA would be eternally greatfull.

I never miss a chance for some good karate/water themed dad jokes. So here's some fun ways to add more meaning to donations

$5 Water themed karate, is a thing..?... right? Team kata and synchronized swimming have more in common than we thought.

$50 Wax on, wax off... Karate on a canoe for next weeks classes?

$100 I know Bruce Lee said "Empty your cup." But I don't think a full dojo tsuami was what he was refering too...

$200 (+) There's 2 minutes of class left: you're feeling partched from carrying the team the entire class. You ask Sensei for water. Sensei nods, throws the most epic-non CGI-backflip tornado kick and lands it with a flash flood rushing behind him and say's: "In this dojo we are always stay "CURRENT" with athletic hydration standards"

We will be keeping all our members informed via email, social media, and this fundraiser as the details are relased to us. For those who do choose to help, thank you.
