Hello to all followers of www.newsthatmovesu.com
It's Paige Bluhdorn here!
My friend Deborah Terhune, Founder of Growing Up Africa, is building an education campus in Soweto South Africa, GUA's 4th project. Very interested in her work, I asked, how I could help? Without skipping a beat, she said, "the deadline for the balance of concrete needed, is May 1." All other materials for the project have been donated. WOW! I thought, this is amazing. I asked how much needed to be raised and she said, the quantity calculated will cost $ 100,000.00. "I thought for a second and then said, "we can do this, but I will need all my friends including my Facebook friends, my newsthatmovesu followers and all of your friends, Deborah, to raise $ 100,000.00. "
One thing I do know, is that our mutual friends are filled with generosity, compassion, and are committed to making a difference in the world.
I reassured Deborah that if we pool our efforts by creating awareness, we can and we will raise the funds needed for the concrete. Oh! and by the way, the foundations are already poured.
Deborah has spent many years in Africa and sees the desperate need for schools and related infrastructure.
"If we build it, they will come and they will learn."
It's such a joy to see the children anxiously awaiting their new school. For the children, I thought, it must be like waiting for Santa on Christmas morning. Deborah explained, "we cannot give up on humanity and we cannot expect any one individual, government or corporation to do it all."
Growing Up Africa is a registered 501 (c) 3 with an amazing following of university student interns, volunteers and a professional team, all working pro bono and in-kind - for FREE. It is an undertaking that is overwhelming in both scope and scale. This is why I want to rally all the HELP I can for this amazing and worthy cause.
Deborah, like you, is determined to leave this world a better place and what better start than to build the facilities needed to Educate, impacting entire communities where the need is greatest? To that end, my father an educator himself, taught me early on, the importance of education and its lasting effects on all economies.
Together we must work to wipe out ignorance and in doing so wipe out senseless tragedies like the recent massacre of students in Kenya.
Education must be the weapon of choice.
" Education is the most powerful weapon which you can use to change the world."
-Nelson Mandela
