Austin update:
Over the weekend Austin started not feeling well again. He complained of being more tired, his voice became raspy again, he spiked a fever late Sunday night and we found he had thrown up at some point. School said he was more tired, was laying on the school bus, and wasn't quite his normal self. I brought him into the ER around 4pm Monday night. He had to use the bathroom before we went back and when he went to the bathroom he was urinating a full stream of blood. Since then, he continues to have blood-streamed urine.
Princeton transferred us from the ED to Masonic. We got settled in about 2am. It sounds like it will be a long week of testing again. Everything is still an unknown.
The backstory is that we first were admitted to Masonic on 9/3-9/8 and since then have been doctoring what feels like every other day to and from Masonic back to Princeton to see the nephrology team, infectious disease, and soon to be rheumatology. Just when they think they have a treatment plan he has a set back or they want to run additional labs. He is getting blood draws at least 2 times a week, getting weights, and BP checks since we have been home. Now we are back in the hospital so we don't know what the next month will bring again.
He was diagnosed with nephrotic syndome, nephrotic/neprhitic, and now mesangial proliferative glomerulonephritis. They know he has an acute kidney injury but they don't know why, what, or how it happened.
This has been really difficult for us and him. Not only is he sick, he's missing school, and has 3 older sisters at home that are having to help more around the house, and function more independent than they have. My mom has been a huge help in going to our house until Dustin can get there and getting them off to school in the morning. Dustin's work has been flexible with his schedule so he can get the girls on the school bus too. They have been coming to and from the hospital as well. But it is upsetting to them to see their brother laying in the hospital bed. They also play hockey so thankfully we have such awesome teammates they have been getting rides to and from practice. But this is also burdening other families as well.
An even further backstory is that over the summer we spent all summer saving money, paying extra bills, etc because we knew that come August I would be back in school. I had a lot of mom guilt that I was selfishly making my family suffer for the next 9 months so I could go back to school. I felt like it was worth it for my families future and in the long run would be good for us. I started school on August 26th. I was only 1 week into school when all of this started, he became more sick, and we were hospitalized.
Being a FT student in the nursing program meant that I wouldn't be able to work my FT job, therefore I had to resign my position. That money was supposed to be used to pay bills while I was in school and now it is being used for transportation to and from Masonic hospital from Princeton, parking fees in the garage, Dustin is now missing work as well, and food/drinks while I am staying with Austin here at the hospital. These expenses were not part of the plan.
At this point, we are taking 1 day at a time. It is now Tuesday and we will wait for the renal team to come and see him and tell us our plan for the day. Austin is so brave for all he is going through right now, the pokes, and prods are something that this 4 year old shouldn't have to be faced with.
We will use this page to continue to provide updates about him. Thanks for thinking of our family at this time.
