On Thursday night (11/13), I rushed my sweet cat, Remy, to the emergency vet after getting home and seeing him acting strangely. The vet confirmed my fears that he had a urinary blockage and needed immediate treatment. The emergency vet got him unblocked and the next morning, I transferred him to a regular vet where he’s been hospitalized ever since. On Monday (11/17), the new vet gave me the bad news that none of the treatment worked and he’s going to require a perineal urethrostomy (PU) surgery and will be hospitalized for another week. This is his only option. Unfortunately, poor Remy completely blocked again after they took his catheter out, and he was too swollen for them to put a catheter back in. Right now he is being kept comfortable and closely monitored until his surgery on Wednesday (11/19).
I told the vet to do whatever she needed to do to make sure he is okay and he gets to come home, however, my funds are already completely drained from his first visit to the emergency vet. On top of the $1,500 for his initial treatment on Thursday night, the vet quoted me $3,600 for his treatment up to this point, the surgery, and another week of hospitalization. Given that this is his only shot, I gave her the go ahead with the knowledge that I may be drowning in debt to ensure that Remy makes it.
Remy is a sweet boy with so much more life to live. He’s only a year and a half old. He’s a weird little guy who loves belly rubs, likes to roll on his head when you pet him, flops instead of loafs, and adores cuddling. He’s the baby of my little family, and he knows it. He’s so loved and doted on, and I just want him to be okay. This has been an emotionally and financially turbulent experience for me and a painful, lonely experience for him.
If you can help at all, whether it’s donating or sharing this with someone who can, I would be so, so grateful.
Sincerely,
A broke graduate student who misses her cat and is desperately trying to avoid crippling debt
