UN Youth Aotearoa Leadership Tour

My name is Janet Baird and I am from Arnhem Land Northern territory, I currently live in Palmerston and attend Palmerston Senior College where I am completing my year 11 studies.
Last year I was selected to take part in IMPACT – a three year Indigenous youth Leadership Program. During my time in IMPACT I have had countless oppurtunities to step out of my comfort zone to develop my confidence and personal skills as a young proud Indigenous leader in my community. My spare time is filled with 3 different sports and I captain the junior girls rugby league team.
I am very passionate about making a difference around education for young Indigenous people. The lack of education is a big problem, I'm very passionate about giving every child the opportunity to learn how to read and write. My mum is a preschool teacher in northeast arhnem land and I think that's where I get my passion from. Spending time with Indigenous elders and speaking to my grandmothers and grandfathers about the youth of today, has given me an insight of how they talk about the importance of guiding Indigenous youth down the right path or else our culture might become lost. I want to close the gap in education and keep our culture and traditions from fading by helping to create open doors for children by making them realise they are the future that we need.
I have recently been selected to travel to New Zealand to participate and represent the NT at the UN Aeotora Leadership Tour. Which was an oppurtunity that I was encourged to apply for by staff at the IMPACT Program.
I am the only person from the NT selected and one of only 16 young Australians selected to attend this conference. The Aeotora Leadership Tour focuses on Indigenous affairs across the Tasman.
Australia and New Zealand have approached Indigenous relations and reconciliation in vastly different ways, and there is much to be learnt from one another. In addition to this, ALT is designed to build the confidence and knowledge of delegates to become active members in our communities.
The Aotearoa Leadership Tour is an opportunity like no other to learn about Indigenous rights and culture through a two-week tour of New Zealand and Australia, where we will compare and contrast the approaches taken by governments, NGOs and the private sector in both New Zealand and Australia to achieve Indigenous equality and empowerment.
Over the course of two weeks in two countries, we will learn about the rich cultures of the Indigenous peoples of both countries, the historical struggle to have their rights recognised and their attempts to preserve culture and tradition in the 21st century.
To attend the Conference, I need to raise $2500 (which includes registration and travel costs to New Zealand). any contribution to this goal would be greatly appreciated!
Along my journey, I will be sure to capture all experiences and learnings that the trip offers, so that I can share back and benefit my community in whatever way possible!
Thank-You!
