As some of you may or may not know, Kerry Brown, my sister-in-law, was recently diagnosed with colon cancer. It was devastating news and quite a shock to our entire family, as she has always been very healthy. She went through with a major surgery to remove the cancer and part of her affected area, and bravely endured the extreme pain and difficult healing. She was eager to quickly heal, get all of this behind her, and get back to her demanding work to help support her family. Initially the doctors were pretty certain that they removed it all and she would not need chemotherapy, but at her follow-up, they discovered that the cancer had spread into one of her lungs. In efforts to aggressively fight that area, she was in for her pre-op for removing the lung cancer, and it was then discovered that the tumor had already grown in size in less than two weeks, and now there is another spot on her other lung. This meant that she had to undergo yet another surgery, missed more work and family time, and more painful recovery. The oncologist has stated that it is Stage IV cancer. This devastating news means that for her, her husband, and three wonderful children (two teenage daughters who are very positive and are fantastic students, and an energetic, inquisitive 9 year old son). The diagnosis comes with a grueling future of expensive chemotherapy, immunotherapy, radiology, anxiety, emotional and physical drain, etc., with of course the goal of being cancer-free, and a return to normal activities.

In considering this campaign, the family was very hesitant since they have never been one to ask for help, especially with finances. We are running this campaign in an effort to help make her and her family's life just a little bit easier during this difficult process, as the medical bills are already piling up. The funds are needed immediately to alleviate immediate anxieties about the family’s lost income during medical leave, and to persevere through this scary and uncertain time. All of this is going to require more than what our family is able to financially support on our own.
