Tysons Emergency Surgery

On February 23rd, Tyson was scheduled for a cryptorchid neuter as he had a retained testicle.

Post surgery, we noticed small amounts of swelling around the incision sites which we were told was completely normal. As the days went on, we noticed the swelling getting considerably worse. Out of concern I called the vet and sent pictures, they told me he looked fine but I insisted on a recheck. Tuesday morning, we brought Tyson in for his check up, the vet told me he would be fine and to "just ice it". I had to push for any sort of pain medication as they were happy to just send us home with an ice pack. The swelling was so severe Tyson couldn't sit r lay down making resting or sleeping impossible for him. He also told us the swelling would be gone within 2-3 days.

That night Tyson had another restless night unable to get comfortable or get any rest. I woke up the next morning at 6:45am to find Tyson on the bathroom floor in pain, I sat down beside to comfort him and noticed blood on the floor underneath him. I tried to stay calm and figure out where the blood was coming from.

Tysons incision on his stomach had opened up and was bleeding. At this stage his scrotum had also swelled to the size of a tennis ball. Tyson was in so much pain and discomfort he could barely walk and was terrified for anyone to touch him.

I called the Mississauga Oakville Veterinary Emergency Hospital and headed straight there with Tyson. We checked Tyson in and waited for the call from the emergency vet.

Two hours later, the technician called me to give me an update, they weren't completely certain why Tysons incision had opened or why his scrotum had swelled so big. They said it could possibly be an infection, blood clots or the stitches could have been done wrong. Tyson would need to be seen by another surgeon and have an ultrasound to find the root cause. We were told Tyson would be slightly sedated to ease his pain and we were told to go home and wait for a call.

Around 1:30pm the surgeon called me to update me on Tysons situation. After touching the area around Tysons incision the wound popped open and a lot of puss came out. Tyson had an infection in his incision site. They were still unsure if this infection is what was causing the swelling in his scrotum.

They told us Tyson would have to stay overnight in the hospital on the IV and was given 2 different antibiotics. A sample was taken from his incision to be tested and all his blood work re-done. Tyson now has to have a scrotum ablation.

For Tysons visit and ultrasound and for his surgery we were quoted $6500 and told this would not include aftercare, that would be extra after the surgery.

Tyson is our baby, we love him so much!! He is the most lovable, cuddliest boy and just loves people. Any donations, prayers or even just sharing his story would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
