Who is Tim?

Timothy Ross came into the world on December 12th, 1962 in Erie, Pennsylvania. He proved through his childhood experiences that he would be a thrill seeker, adventurer, and determined. Day trips such as camping, kayaking, and traveling to Niagara Falls, Waldameer and Cedar Point amusement park would be precursors to how Time could satiate his desire for adventure. Determined and stubborn, he would additionally find a hobby to further fill himself, scuba diving.

Tim started scuba diving at fifteen and enjoyed it immensely. He dove with his friend almost anywhere they could. His trips ranged from Lake Erie, Chautauqua Lake, and Findley Lake. As skills grew into young adulthood, Tim managed to take a dive Tobermory, Canada, one of the meccas for diving. He loved diving, and he took it this adventurous hobby all throughout his life. He also translated his sense of adventure into service.

Timothy signed up as a volunteer firefighter at fifteen to embrace his adventurous nature and willingness to help. From car accidents and collapsed buildings, Tim saw it all. He felt accomplished and grateful for the opportunity to help and serve his community through serving in times of crisis. Tim once assisted in saving a women's life by implementing the "Jaws of Life"  to cut metal and reach a woman who broke both legs. The woman thankfully made it through the experience, and she walked up to Tim's firefighter unit six months later thanking them for rescuing her. Time achieved a sense of contributing back to his community and offered an altruistic avenue for his thrill seeking.

Tim set his eyes toward engineering after high school in 1981. He went to school for electrical engineering in Florida, met his future wife, and had a child in 1992 with her. Tim got a job with the Department of Defense, and worked for five years. Due to the prevalence of his condition, he retired and stayed in Florida. He currently lives in his home with a family member who helps with basic living and receives contract help from an outside agency. It is been a struggle for Tim with his condition.

The Struggle

Timothy was diagnosed  at nineteen with multiple sclerosis (MS). Multiple sclerosis is a progressive autoimmune disease that is currently not curable that attacks the nervous system for the entirety of the lifespan ( https://mymsaa.org/). Timothy lost movement in his legs at 27 and experienced blindness for about a year before degenerative blocking medication. Thankfully, his eyesight returned in the presence progression blocking medicine. Timothy also experienced light neurologically spasms before the medicine was provided. This disease has been present with Tim for most of his life, and it has been slowly stripping him of movement, autonomy, and normal bodily functions. It has gotten much worse, but Tim is a fighter and has stayed determined all throughout his life. Before five years ago from this date, he was driving himself to go to the gym, to Dennys, and other places to meet with friends. He has done all that he can to make the most of it and to enjoy the life that God has given him despite feeling stripped of its quality. He is adventurous and is stubbornly determined. Before Tim lost his feeling in his legs, he wanted to challenge himself on one last major adventure.

The Call To Adventure And Service: Tim's Ride

Timothy Ross started a 1,250 mile bicycle ride on 6/14/1986 in West Palm Beach, Florida and completed his trip 6/28/1986 in Erie, Pennsylvania to raise money and awareness for the Multiple Sclerosis Association of America (MSAA). Tim discipled himself and trained for this ride for months, and local newspaper spotlight was ever present when he announced his future trek. With simply grit, determination, and help from a few friends in a mobile home; he raised $20,000 for MSAA. His trip concluded with meeting the mayor of Erie to congratulate him on his trek. It was a massive success, and he received even more publicity from Associated Press and local newspapers. Tim's answer to the call of adventure and sacrifice to show himself to the world that this disease wouldn't not quench his fight provided hope to his friends and the world. MS will one day have a cure thanks to Tim's contribution and to his supporters.

Tim is an adventurous fighter who will celebrate his 35th anniversary of his ride this year, and his family hopes that he will receive many more opportunities to celebrate his life with him.

The Need

His daily living entails being stationary in bed waiting for a bed sore to heal that developed in June, 2020 during surgery for a catheter that directly attaches to the bladder. He is able to leave the bed for a few hours at a time, but he has been additionally restricted for over half a year. Tim also has had multiple appointments with a urology team to breakdown minerals and sentiments that regularly build up in his bladder in part because of his neurologically degenerative disease. Much care is required for Tim to sustain basic living functions, and it has been a sizable, financial cost.

Tim's retirement is close to empty. Tim's income through pension and disability are not sufficient to sustain the costs of routine care. This care is present due to the progression of his disease impeding basic digestive bodily functions and his working memory. The care is needed, and it is more expensive to out source through nursing homes and other means of care. It is ideal to keep him in his home to give him a sense of autonomy in the midst of his progressive degradation. The team, thankfully, is great.

Tim is receiving the best available treatment. A private health and rehabilitation system weekly checks on his health and assists the homecare team on topics of catheter care, wound care, dieting, routine hygiene, mental health, and even provides connections for in home antibiotic treatments. The homecare team has once been asked to provide fluid antibiotics for ten days in response to Tim's urinary tract infection discovered through the private health's microbiological lab assessments. Both the private health team and the homecare team are providing the best available care and treatment. The predominant issue is maintaining his current living situation.

Tim also has a few outstanding medical bills that need to be addressed. His health insurance is fantastic, but a few bills have come up due to not being perfectly covered by his health insurance. This is a necessary, but secondary need.

We would love for you to join Tim in his fight against this prominent, invasive disease and help him enjoy the rest of whatever God gives as his retirement. He has fought and strived all his life to maintain and provide himself a sense of an adventurous and altruistic life. He has helped and motivated our family, he has helped neighbors and roommates financially, and he has impacted his friends to keep fighting in their struggles through simply existing. Help Tim live so that he may simply live and help others live their lives.

Thank You.

Tim Ross Personal Statement:
I'm never intended for this to happen. I would do whatever it took to prevent this from happening if it was in my control. Even as I had MS, I saved, worked, and lived as best as I could. I would do whatever it takes to not be here. However, this is life with MS. This is my life.
