It wasn’t very long ago Jael launched a GoFundMe page to try to help Katia Russell’s family. Katia is an adopted daughter of Gord and Heather Russell who has quadriplegia with multiple problems. Today he needs your help.

On May 12th, Mothers’ Day 2019, the artist you know as Jael the Musicman in the musical world, through his pen name Andrew Cody as a children’s book author, as Jay Thomson the speaker, pod-caster, film maker, non-fiction writer and natural health coach, or Jim Thomson II the childhood friend and early Jesus Music pioneer in Canada, suffered a rare stroke in the cerebellum.

This type of stroke presents some confusing symptoms. It does not follow the pattern of other strokes in a number of ways. First, there are deficits created on both sides simultaneously. Rather than impede his ability to communicate with the outside world, the world is altered in the way it is presented to him. Jay’s perceptions are altered by what he describes as inputs. For example, instead of seeing the way we do, each of his eyes present different visions of the world, making orientation and interpreting visual input complicated.  He experiences constant dizziness, with intense accompanying nausea that overwhelms his senses for walking, sitting and even laying on a bed. This also brings difficulty performing basic tasks of personal care, creating, and doing any work. He has completely contradictory feedback, or inputs, like having the frozen side of his body that is also spastic internally and externally, and is the side that is weakest, experience differing forms of numbness and neuropathy. This varies in location in his body but includes constant “pins and needles” somewhere. On the opposite side, his body has no sensations of hot or cold, liquid or dryness. Pain due to raw nerve endings can erupt anywhere at any time on both sides of the body even from the pressure of lying in bed so his inputs are very messed up.

 While through therapy Jay has made significant strides forward, he is keenly aware that until the inputs are fixed, he is simply learning how to cope with a handicap. This is why he is seeking help in the USA where he will incur the costs that this crowdfunding page is designed to offset.  He has learned to eat in spite of a partially paralysed throat but his singing voice is gone. This is perhaps the greatest trial for the singer/songwriter. The lack of voice not only keeps him from performing and leading worship, but denies him the vehicle he most used to communicate melody as a songwriter, a producer and band leader.

Through therapy Jay struggles to walk without balance, keyboard, play a few instruments, bathe, and become food independent. He is constantly surprising people with his determination and his progress. His goals for his recovery include being able to read, write and type easily, being able to sit at a desk for long enough periods to accomplish tasks related to business, and of course, complete such tasks without the current hours of effort required, and his heart’s desire is to be able to sing, play guitar and piano with a professional touch once again.

Looking at an example of what has occurred in the experimental medical field is very encouraging. As far back as this stoke has set him, Jay believes 2 things for his recovery. Firstly, God is a healer and has a purpose in allowing this situation. He will be glorified in how this plays out.  Secondly, as a student of natural healing, (read that God working according to the nature he designed) there may be one ground breaking experimental discovery in the treatment he is seeking that may benefit many others in this situation. This is good reason to believe that while some of the available treatments have never been applied to stroke, they are a perfect match to the condition. This is not a pipe dream.  We are seeking funds to go beyond Perispinal Etanercept, which is temporary and does not produce the effect shown 20% of the time. Those are great odds, but we are convinced that there are things that can guarantee results.  There are 4 treatments that when pursued simultaneously show even better promise.

Jay is married to Suzanne, and together they have a large creative family and run several small businesses. They are very active in their church community and the community around them, always willing to be of help wherever they can. Their home is always abuzz with visitors coming and going whom they love to support and include in their life. In addition to a very busy home life, Suzanne runs a small bakery. At their church, Jay has been teaching, leading worship and they host church groups in their home.  Jay has been a musician and writer all of his adult life and now dreams of fully participating in this very full life they have once again.

The reasons we need you to give as soon as you can, is that until treatment is underway, Jay remains at risk for more stroke events. The Canadian alternatives are very high risk with a high likelihood of permanent disability. Jay is also in a hurry to return to a very active artistic community he is a part of, for projects already underway. We need to raise a minimum of 60K US dollars for treatment which will realistically be 70K once the costs of raising the money and travel for treatment is factored in. If he lives to be as old as both his father and his grandfather, the amount will come to approximately 3,000 US dollars a year. Who would not pay that to live without a handicap? Unfortunately it’s not something we can put on a payment plan so we need to raise large sums for each step of the process. Treatments can start when we reach 22K. The time frame to raise the money may be flexible if things do not go as well as expected. People are being helped when treated years after a stroke event.  It is possible to be helpful even if this has been around for a while by the time you see it if the goals has not been met.
