Dear community,
It is with great humility that I reach out to you to ask for your help. As many of you may know, I am starting the surgical part of my transitioning. Being able to get these gender affirming surgeries has been a goal of mine for over 5 years. I had been saving up diligently during all those years and I felt prepared, but during the pandemic I had to use those funds to survive.
At the beginning of the year I made the very scary decision to leave a retail job to pursue being a full time performer, organizer, and space maker. Once the pandemic hit, I lost all of my income. Having been a gig worker, getting access to unemployment was very difficult. Therefore all my savings were exhausted trying to keep up with ongoing living expenses like bills and getting equipment for online shows. Maintaining employment and finding secure, safe jobs is an incredible challenge for trans women of color, let alone in a gig economy during a pandemic. With these funds I will be able to keep up with my bills and expenses as well as access more gender affirming procedures.
For those of you who may not know me I am a San Francisco based performer and activist, I have been privileged to work on organizing events for the Trans community for about 8 years starting in high school. I have been a volunteer organizer for Trans March, Trans Day Of Remembrance, Trans Day Of Visibility, and many other events. I have also been organizing for LGBTQ youth rights being a prominent organizer in the passing of the FAIR ACT and AB 1266. I also have created "Dragtivism" which is a set of curriculum focusing on the importance of Drag in liberation work.
It’s been an honor to serve my community, and I’m also reflecting on how the ideals of community care and mutual aid apply to myself as well. This is a very hard thing for me to do as I am not used to asking for help, I am used to giving support. I ask you to help me be able to have the recovery I deserve, and to focus on my healing without having to worry about making my bills. With these funds I will be able to afford to take time off till March while I recover from multiple gender affirming procedures that I will get in the span of two months.
With much humility and love,
Rexy
