Imagine being courageous enough to follow a dream that takes you from your home country to the country you have chosen – from Sri Lanka to Canada. A journey of more than 13,000 kms and halfway around the world.
You get to Canada in February 2020, settle into a new job and then the unimaginable happens. Covid19 hits. A month after you have arrived, everything shuts down, including your job. The job from which you planned to send money home to your wife and parents. The job from which you intended to save money to bring your family here next year.
As if this is not hard enough, then imagine you get scammed out of your entire savings by heartless people preying on those who want to be law abiding in a new country. In a flash, $5,200 has disappeared. The RCMP are investigating. There is no chance you will recover all the money you had in the world.
This is the story of my friend Randunu Bimal. We met in March, after my father died, when I offered much of his furniture free to a new home. Randunu had no furnishings, or money to buy any. We struck up a conversation and then a friendship. He was genuinely grateful for the gift of furniture, expressing it to me frequently.
I want to help my friend. We know Canada is full of heart, generosity and compassion. This is why I have set up this GoFundMe page. There are so many good humans in the world, I know we can help him recover is $5,200.
