Empower Muslim Artists: Fund Fanana Banana's Mural

Goal: We’re fundraising to cover all supply costs, and if we meet our stretch goal, to provide artist stipends.

About Us: Fanana Banana is a grassroots arts movement based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Since 2018, we’ve centered Muslim women artists through our events—starting with Milwaukee’s first art show by and for Muslim women. Since then, we’ve continued curating community-focused, unapologetically creative spaces.

This summer, we’re working to renew a mural on the south-facing wall of Al-Amanah Market on 13th Street—a cornerstone location for Milwaukee’s Muslim and SWANA communities, many of whom are immigrants, refugees, and first-generation Americans.

The mural, We Are the Power of Society, was painted five years ago by Amal Azzam in collaboration with Nayfa Naji, Wajiha Akbar, and Aya Mustafa. In today’s political climate—marked by ongoing surveillance, violence, and erasure—this mural still speaks volumes. But it’s time for new life. Amal is now passing the torch to a new generation of Muslim women artists to reimagine the wall and its power.

Fanana Banana operates independently, without nonprofit status. That freedom means no institutional red tape—but it also limits our access to grants and traditional funding.
