The Proclamation:

As one of only a few communities in South Los Angeles that is established in name and recognition for its noteworthy contributions, we deem that
"Richard ‘Meri Ka Ra’ Byrd Place” is one that will take its place among those of high esteem.

Reverend Richard “Meri Ka Ra” Byrd has been the Senior Minister of KRST Unity Center of AfRaKan Spiritual Science, (formerly Christ Unity Center) for 32 years, serving not only the neighborhood of 78th Place and Western Avenue, but the city at large and beyond in numerous ways.

Under his leadership and personal interactions we recognize the progress and upliftment in countless lives.  Additionally, through such programs and involvement in social justice, youth education and development, prison ministry, economic and housing assistance, and of course, spiritual and cultural enrichment and more, Rev. Meri Ka Ra is one deserving of recognition and support to further the community of KRST Unity Center as an Institution that will thrive in perpetuity, and to serve as a model for upcoming leadership throughout the city.

We humbly request your generous contribution for the assistance of our Goal of $64,000 for:

(1)   The funding of the installation and “Street Sign Naming Dedication” ceremony

(2)   The Creation and unveiling of a Bust by the world renowned artist, Nijel Binns.

(3) A monetary offering of $1,000 per each year of service to Rev. Byrd for the recognition of all of his valuable contributions and the love that he has given to this community and to the City of Los Angeles at-large.
