As we step into a season centered on giving, gathering, and holding our loved ones close, I feel compelled from the deepest part of my heart to ask for your help. Help to bring my father, Juan Alberto home from a Louisiana detention center where he has been held for 7 months. Help to reunite him with the family that has been aching for him every single day.

My name is Ashley, I am student at Mount Holyoke College writing this with a vulnerable heart. In May of 2025, my dad was taken by ICE. For 48 agonizing hours, he disappeared. We did not know where he was, if he was safe, if he was even alive. While I could write endlessly about the injustices and abuse he faced, I will simply say this: after those 48 hours, nothing about our lives became easier. Since then, he has been held in a prison, fighting for the right to stay in the United States. A place he has called home for over two decades.

My dad has spent more than twenty years building a life here. He has worked tirelessly across New England as a chef, landscaper, handyman, and construction worker. Serving the community in ways that often go unseen but hold everything together. He is part of the thousands of Latino workers who keep our streets clean, our lawns cared for, and our tables full. But more importantly, he is a caregiver, a father of five, and a source of strength and generosity for neighbors, local businesses, and anyone who needed a helping hand. He came here, like millions of others, to build a better life, not just through labor, but through love, care, and commitment to community.

In these seven months since him being taken away, what he has left behind is a 9-year-old daughter who wakes up every day with the trauma of her Dad suddenly disappearing; 3 sons in school who are confused and anxious, wondering why their father is so far away; and a family trying to hold itself together under immense fear and uncertainty. My dad is not a criminal. He is a hardworking, loving person who just like all of us wants stability, safety, and a chance to care for the people he loves.

My passion for my community, my commitment to justice, my creativity, my work ethic—comes from my dad. He taught me responsibility, joy, resilience, and how to keep a positive mind even in the darkest moments. And now, those lessons are what keep me going as we navigate this painful journey.

But despite everything, we remain determined. We will do everything in our power to bring him home. Three days ago, my dad was notified that he will have a hearing on December 9th, 2025, where a judge will decide whether he is allowed to stay in the United States or be deported to Guatemala. If he is allowed to stay, he may be granted bail.

We are asking for your help to cover his legal fees, travel costs, bond, and essential expenses needed to reunite him with us. Every single donation, No matter the amount, makes a difference. We are profoundly grateful for any support you can offer, and we hope that whatever you give returns to you tenfold.

I also want to highlight that my dad is not the only one. He is not just a name on a document—he is a person, a father, a community member. And there are so many families like ours who are being torn apart, traumatized, and displaced by a system that treats people like animals instead of human beings. These are not isolated incidents. They are part of a larger pattern of violence against immigrant communities during a deeply harmful political moment.

The December 9th Hearing was a Preliminary and the Judge stated that the court date to determine Juan's Legal status will now be in January 2025. Mi papá no es un criminal. Es un hombre trabajador y amoroso que, como todos nosotros, solo quiere estabilidad, seguridad y la oportunidad de cuidar a su familia y luchar por sus metas.

Mi pasión por mi comunidad, mi compromiso con la justicia, mi creatividad y mi ética de trabajo—todo eso viene de mi papá.
