Reuben’s Cancer Journey

Hi, I’m making this go fund me for my father, Reuben. On March 22nd of this year my dad was diagnosed with stage 4 metastatic renal cancer. The cancer was found in his kidneys and by the time it was discovered, the cancer had spread to his bones. Since his diagnosis he has tried the chemo pills, but unfortunately those were damaging his liver, essentially killing him faster than the cancer itself. His other option was immunotherapy infusions but the doctors informed us his body is too weak to handle infusions. With the doctors exhausting all of their options, they informed us that it’s time to take him home and make him comfortable. My dad has been on hospice for 3 weeks now. Along with the cancer my dad was also diagnosed with muscular dystrophy. He’s had MD for the past couple years which was slowly eating away at his muscles. With the cancer plus the muscular dystrophy, it has made him immobile. At this point in time he’s only able to move his head and his arms. For those first 2 weeks, we were fortunate enough to have my Aunt be with him 24/7 and watch over him and tend to his needs. Unfortunately she has had to go back to work in Southern California and this is where we need the help. My dad needs in home care as he really struggles through the night. Insurance will not cover the cost of in home care, so our only options is having to pay out of pocket. Our family will do whatever necessary to make sure my dad gets the right care he needs in this stage of his life. I know many of you have asked how you could help, and quite frankly it’s financial. These funds will be used to pay for in home healthcare, medical bills, meals, and any other unforeseen medical expenses as my dad continues to navigate through this stage of his life. The remaining funds would be used to pay for funeral expenses, and any lasting medical bills. My dad has served his community in law enforcement for over 28 years. Reading all the comments on his Facebook page showed me how loved he truly is. He’s been a mentor to many and a hero to me. It’s personally been hard for me seeing him in pain, but my dads a fighter and seeing his resilience during this time is a reminder to many to never give up no matter what life may throw at you.
