RPD Leo has recently retired from Avon and Somerset Police having served from April 2022 as a General Patrol Dog. He came to me as a 9-month-old foster dog in 2021 via German Shepherd Rescue South as he had some behavioural ‘challenges’ that made him an unsuitable pet. Over the year that followed, I worked with Leo to prepare him to become my next Police Dog, and it quickly became apparent that he was happiest when working. As the pack matriarch, Eva had a strong paw in guiding Leo in his early days- he learned to give her the respect she demanded!

Leo quickly established himself on the street as a highly motivated dog, and he consistently maintained a high success rate with a significant number of arrests. His tracking ability is second to none, and he had a real talent for finding people who really didn’t want to be found. Leo also proved himself to be adept at dealing with conflict- the majority of criminals he faced wisely surrendered, but those that didn’t found out the hard way…

Leo had a number of notable deployments in his career for which he was formally recognised including:

  • Commended for actions in the 2024 Summer Disorder & co-recipient of the Service Dogs UK Special Team award.
  • Commended for detaining a male armed with an axe in Bristol City Centre.
  • Commended for the off-duty arrest of suspected thieves at National Police Dog trials 2026.

Unfortunately, Leo’s career has been cut short following a diagnosis of lumbosacral disease. He has received treatment and is responding well; however to maintain his quality of life he can no longer work. Due to his bond with me, and his intolerance towards people outside of his family, Leo cannot be rehomed and will stay with me in retirement.

We have now relocated to South Australia for work, and Leo will be joining us in early 2027 along with Retired Prison Dogs Eva and Astraea.

They have all completed the requirements for export from the UK to Australia with fantastic support from SPA Vets Gloucester and LadyHaye Pet Travel.

The export process is complex and expensive, and has already cost several thousand pounds in veterinary fees and administration. With the remaining veterinary procedures, flights and 10-day quarantine in Melbourne, the final costs will be in excess of £7000 for Leo.

Leo has specific needs that can best be met by staying with his pack, and we are committed to bringing him to Australia no matter the personal cost. This fundraiser has been set up for those that wish to donate to help him on his way so he can enjoy the retirement he deserves.

In the event of any unforeseen circumstances that prevent either dog from making the journey, any funds raised will be distributed to the WAGS Retired Police Dog Charity.
