Hello, my name is Carley Deery and I am a senior at Carlisle High School. My goal is to one day become a veterinarian. I have been passionate about pets my entire life, so until I can provide care to animals as a doctor of veterinary medicine, I hope to make a difference to pets by raising money to purchase pet oxygen masks that first responders can use when needed.
My dad, who is a professional firefighter, recently shared a story with me about how he was able to save a family's dog that suffered smoke inhalation after being trapped inside of a house fire. He was able to utilize a pet oxygen mask that saved the puppy's life. When I asked my dad about the mask he informed me that not all ambulances in his department have such devices. This story made me want to find a way to make sure all ambulances in the Des Moines Metro Area had pet oxygen masks available if ever needed. Most departments don't budget for devices designed for animals so by raising money and donating these pet oxygen masks departments will have the ability to provide initial care until definitive care can be provided at an animal hospital.
Each year over 40,000 pets are killed in residential house fires and over 500,000 are impacted overall. Nationally, less than 25% of fire departments have pet oxygen masks. By raising money and providing these masks to first responders, I hope that animals affected by fires have a better chance of survival.
Reaching my goal of $3,000 will allow me to purchase 35 kits that I will distribute to fire departments in the Des Moines Metro Area. For those who reside in the Des Moines Metro Area, I am baking dog treats in exchange for donations. Because many living outside the metro area may want to take part in this fundraiser, it will not be possible for me to deliver these treats to you, but your goodwill donation would be greatly appreciated.
