Title: Helping Our Parents Recover After a Devastating Scam
Our parents have spent their entire lives working hard. After raising four children and overcoming a life of poverty, they were finally enjoying a quiet, frugal retirement in their 70s. Recently, that peace was shattered.
They were targeted by a sophisticated online scam. It began with a fake "virus alert" on my dad's phone and ended with scammers gaining full access to their devices. Through a complex series of manipulations involving their bank account and a fraudulent cryptocurrency transfer, these predators stole $10,000—nearly their entire life savings.
Because they live on a fixed income, this loss is catastrophic. My parents are proud people; they feel ashamed and "broken" by this event. As a family, we are doing everything we can—filing reports with the FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3) and the FTC, freezing credit, and securing their devices—but none of us are in a position to replace what was stolen.
We are humbly reaching out to our community to help them recoup this loss. Any contribution will go directly toward restoring their modest savings so they can return to the contented life they worked so hard to build.
