Restore Waterbury VT Neighborhood

My name is Martha. I am asking for your financial help to rebuild the lives of 16 people in and around Edge Drive in Waterbury, VT. The existence of this little community was dangerously disrupted by a storm in July, which caused the total collapse of the road, leading to their homes. Part of the neighborhood is now isolated. The residents, including children, some with chronic medical conditions and a pregnant woman are unable access their homes by vehicle and are walking through a wooded trail to and from their homes. The damage has compromised water wells and wastewater systems. Areas of the neighborhood cannot access emergency services by fire or rescue. They cannot receive deliveries, specifically heating fuel, with winter closing in.

The rainstorm caused the failure of a culvert above their homes. Water, sand and gravel cascaded down the hill, resulting in the creation of a large cavern where the road once stood. The subsequent damage spread over nine acres and has left the residents in a precarious situation for additional damage if the roadway and mitigation are not completed.

The neighbors have been in contact with all major emergency authorities. While FEMA, grants and insurance can provide some assistance with costs for the final road reconstruction and home restoration, the agencies require the completion of an engineering study to confirm the reason for the culvert failure and best method for rebuilding the road. The cost of the engineering study falls on the shoulders of the residents.

The cost for the full engineering study is estimated at $40,000. The residents have committed substantial personal funds to their recovery work and have attempted to raise the remainder of the $40,000 privately, to no avail.
