Hi, we’re the grandchildren of Randy James Burnworth, a passionate car builder and the original creator of the Herbie race cars featured in Herbie Goes to Monte Carlo (1977). You may not know his name, but if you’ve seen that movie—you’ve seen his work.

After the film wrapped, Randy bought the Laser 917—a rare and beautiful car inspired by the legendary Porsche 917. This custom-built vehicle carries immense sentimental and historical value. It’s not just a collector’s item—it’s a symbol of a life dedicated to craftsmanship and creativity.

Randy has since passed away, and the Laser 917 he treasured has been locked away for years. It now belongs to us, his grandchildren. We’ve made it our mission to restore it—not just for the history it holds, but to honor our grandfather and fulfill one last wish:

To take our grandmother for a ride in it before she passes.

She stood by Randy through every late night in the garage and every mile driven. To her, this car is a living memory of the love they shared and the life they built together.

We’re incredibly excited to share that Gas Monkey Garage has agreed to do a show featuring the Laser 917 and its restoration—bringing this untold story to a national audience. But we need your help to make it happen.
