***Update: As of March 31, 2023, we have ended our Mural Restoration Fundraiser. Thank you so much to everyone who donated!***
Other Avenues is a worker-owned co-op founded in 1974.
Our goals are:
To maintain a thriving business.
To provide food and supplies for sustainable living and exemplary service.
To support organic and local farms, cooperatives, and other small businesses.
To serve as a model of workplace democracy for the community.
Project Summary
Our storefront mural was completed by Carlo Grunfeld and other OA volunteers in 1995; the San Francisco mural arts association, Precita Eyes, organized the project. It proudly displays our organic produce next to Ocean Beach, looking north to Mount Tam, seaside pelicans, and Seal Rock. Carlo Grunfeld helped Other Avenues renovate the mural in 2014.
Upon becoming an SF Legacy Business in 2019 and being recognized for contributing to the history and identity of the Outer Sunset neighborhood and San
Francisco, the Historic Preservation Commission designated our storefront mural as a historical feature that requires safeguarding. During the pandemic, we could not dedicate time to this task, but now we can allocate staff time to restore and preserve the mural from sun and weather damage.
This process includes scraping off all the flaking paint, cleaning and rinsing the facade, patching and priming, painting, and finally sealing the mural with multiple coats of varnish. Additionally, dry rot and electrical repairs are necessary, resulting in a cost of $10,000. We are also replacing our store's awning concurrently, but this cost is not included in the mural preservation estimate.
Labor required: 6-8 Other Avenues workers, 4+ artists, and building professionals.
Estimated timeline for completion: 6 - 8 weeks
