The Giant Giant Kelp Restoration project in Monterey, California, is facing a critical moment. Our kelp forest, once a thriving underwater ecosystem, is now at risk of disappearing without immediate intervention. The unchecked spread of sea urchins has devastated large areas of kelp, leaving behind barren stretches where vibrant marine life once flourished. We are reaching out to our community and beyond to help us restore this vital habitat before it’s too late.
Join our campaign to restore kelp through changes to the Fish and Game regulations. Giant Giant Kelp Restoration petitioned the California Fish and Game Commission to change allowable uses in Marine Protected Areas to include kelp restoration by harvesting sea urchins and planting kelp. Petition 2023-23MPA_ AM will be decided at the Regional Decadal Management meeting at the Elk's Lodge in San Mateo on April 21, 2026 at 8:00 AM.
We need your help! The Department of Fish and Wildlife and organized fishing groups are opposed to our small grassroots funded non-profit. The only thing that will move the needle are concerned lovers of the ocean speaking up!

With your support, we will bring commercial fishers to Monterey to remove urchins from Tanker's Reef using specialized airlift equipment. Working side by side with recreational volunteer certified kelp restoration divers, our team will clear 92 acres of urchin barrens and transform them back into lush kelp forests. Every donation directly funds this hands-on restoration effort, providing the resources needed to pay for equipment, labor, and coordination between professionals and volunteers.
Restoring kelp forests is about more than just saving plants—it’s about reviving an entire ecosystem. Healthy kelp forests support incredible biodiversity and provide essential foraging habitat for endangered southern sea otters. By contributing to our project, you are helping to ensure a brighter future for Monterey’s ocean life. Please join us in making a lasting difference. Your generosity can help bring our kelp forests back to life!
