“Help little Mia see the world again”

Our coworker and dear friend Ashland, recently opened her heart and home to a very special senior dog. Mia, a sweet diabetic girl, belonged to a longtime client at BVS where her owner could no longer care for her, and Mia’s future was uncertain as an unregulated diabetic senior baby.

Without hesitation, Ashland stepped in. She knew that adopting a senior diabetic dog would come with extra responsibility, and already having 2 dogs, 2 cats, and a little hamster at home she knew it would be quite the task. Daily insulin injections, regular glucose monitoring, prescription diets, and regular vet visits. But, she also knew that Mia deserved comfort, love, and stability in her golden years.

Now Mia needs our help. Because of her diabetes, Mia has developed cataracts and has lost most of her vision in both eyes. She bumps into walls, struggles to navigate new spaces, and soon will no longer be able to see the faces of those who love her so very much.

Thankfully, cataract surgery can restore her sight and dramatically improve her quality of life again. Unfortunately, the difficult part is the cost… Between the procedure, anesthesia for a senior baby, and post operative care, the surgery can be quite expensive, especially on top of the ongoing cost of managing Mia’s diabetes.

As Veterinary professionals, we have seen many patients come in after having this procedure done themselves, and how life-changing this procedure can be for them. We also know that it is not a small financial expense.

Ashland didn’t adopt Mia out of convenience, but because she knew that she deserved love and compassionate care, and she gave a senior dog a second chance when she needed it most.

Now, we are asking to give Mia the chance to see again. To confidently explore her home, to enjoy her walks without fear, and to look into the eyes of the people who love her so very much.
