History of the Memorial:
In November 2001, the bodies of eight women were found in “Campo Algodonero” (“Cotton Field”) in Ciudad Juarez, Mexico. The Memorial for the Victims of Femicide at Campo Algodonero was created after Inter-American Human Rights Court ordered the Mexican government to build a memorial to the victims. The case set a precedent for recognizing femicide and the violation of human rights throughout Latin America and the memorial was meant to serve as a symbol and living memory femicide that continues to affect Ciudad Juarez today. Unfortunately, in 2020 and in the midst of a global increase of gender-based violence, the memorial has fallen into disrepair. Additional Information Here
Our Plan
To restore the memorial by October 25, 2020 for a remembrance event. We are raising funds to provide some much needed TLC to the memorial. In collaboration with the Municipal Institute of Women in Ciudad Juarez, we have identified four top-priorities:
1. Install a Shade Structure
2. Fix Up the Electrical Systems
3. Repair Restrooms
4. Maintain the Name Plaques
In addition, our coalition of volunteers will host a memorial clean-up day to prepare for the reopening. With your support, we can make this a reality. Will you help us?
