Restore Melissa's Home and Hope After Disaster

Donation protected
Hello, my name is Melissa Bennett and I live in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Recently, the residents of Milwaukee, Wisconsin experienced severe flooding. As of right now, FEMA has not received any news from President Trump about providing help, although Milwaukee has been declared a disaster area by our Governor.

In the flood, there were many things damaged. My basement was completely submerged in water, which ultimately raised all the way up to my 1st floor landing upstairs. My washer, dryer, bedroom sets, living room tables, clothes, shoes, irreplaceable items of my now grown children that many parents save and cherish were all damaged. My car is damaged with the repair costs totaling more than the car is worth as it was almost submerged under water. I had no insurance because I simply couldn’t afford it and have one more minor child left at home.

School is starting in just a few weeks and from missing work due to major clean-ups and no working car, not only did I lose a lot of items at home that have to be replaced, I’ve also missed work for a few days. Being a single working mother due to my son's dad passing when he was 4 years old, it is already difficult to maintain our standard of living. But with the added costs of replacing some, not all, of the items that are needed, it’s almost impossible. As of now and how it has always been, it's just myself, my 15-year-old son, and my grown children.

The cost of finding a new car and just the appliances is the 2nd most important thing to me outside of my children’s irreplaceable items. I usually try and figure things out on my own and never ask for help. I work every day as I’ve always had my entire life. With the cost of repairs and everyday bills and expenses, this unfortunate disaster is making it impossible. Although it feels strange to ask complete strangers for any type of help, as I consider myself a person who does what they can to make things happen and provide for my son, I have to admit defeat and put my pride to the side and ask for any type of assistance.

I appreciate that we still have electricity and we didn’t get hurt. There is no hot water as of today and things could always be worse, which I realize. I also appreciate that GoFundMe is an available outlet for those in need. I just want to thank everyone in advance, if not just for taking the time to read this!
