Restore Lawrence High’s Darkroom Lighting
Donation protected
Lawrence High School in Lawrence, Massachusetts, offers an introductory photography course to about 100 students each semester. Under the guidance of teacher Patrick Singleton, students learn the fundamentals of black-and-white photography and darkroom technique. The school’s darkroom is well-equipped with quality enlargers, temperature-controlled water, and good ventilation, but it’s missing one essential element: reliable safelights.
The original red safelights, which allow students to see while working with light-sensitive materials, have deteriorated over time. The red plastic filters have cracked and dried out, leaving only a few dim lights that make it difficult for students to safely and effectively use the space. As a result, it’s not possible for a full group of students to work together in the darkroom, limiting their ability to collaborate and learn.
This fundraiser will provide new amber LED bulbs, designed as “turtle-safe” lights, to restore proper lighting in the darkroom. These bulbs are a modern, energy-efficient update that fit the existing fixtures and match the industry standard for safelights. With this upgrade, students will be able to maintain an orderly workspace, observe their prints as they develop, and work together as a group—making the most of their hands-on learning experience. Your support will help keep the darkroom open and accessible for all students in the program.
