Restore Castro's Laughing Gorilla Mural: ArtLick
Donation protected
David Seibold and Luis da Rosa opened Art Lick Gallery on 19th and Collingwood at the height of the AIDS crisis in San Francisco. Art Lick became a center for queer artists who were celebrating life and standing in resistance to the government's lethargy. It was also a community space. Many artists who showed at Art Lick have died, as did both David and Luis, some have become legends and many had their earliest shows there.
David Seibold painted The Laughing Gorilla on what is now Buffalo Foods at 19th and Castro for Art Lick Gallery. The mural is in dire need of restoration and will require extensive repairs. Help us remember this important and beautiful part of the Castro and San Francisco's history.
Restoration is scheduled to begin in June by a mostly volunteer crew led by Donald Harvey, muralist and one of David's closest friends. We hope to unveil the restored mural in early July.
