On March 12-15, a powerful Kona storm hit the Hawai'i islands, bringing a total of 10-40 inches of torrential rain and 30-40 kph winds, shattering a 75-year rain record. Our preschool, Kahului Hongwanji, was severely flooded and damaged. The floors need to be replaced along with furniture and supplies. Staff accessed the preschool today Monday March 16 and discovered widespread damage. They have started moving furniture and clearing the space. At this time, it is not known the extent of repairs needed but it is certainly no small challenge ahead.

Kahului Hongwanji is a beloved preschool, offering learning programs for keiki 3-5 years of age. Generations of families have attended the preschool, and some of their teachers, like Ms. Fran and Ms. Lourdes, have been there for many years and are all known by children and families.

The preschool is run by Kahului Hongwanji Mission. Kahului Hongwanji Mission is a Jodo Shinshu Buddhist Temple founded over 100 years ago (1911 – 2011) in Kahului, Maui, Hawaii. It is an affiliate organization of the Honpa Hongwanji Mission of Hawaii.

Many families rely on the preschool for a safe and loving place for their keiki, and it enables them to work to support their families. Due to the high cost of living in Hawai'i, many parents work multiple jobs. The prospect of the preschool not being able to operate is devastating for families on many levels. It is also a place of employment, providing income for their teachers and staff.

We, Justin Hughey and Nanna Lindberg, are one of many families who love and rely on the preschool. We live on Maui and our kids are part of the preschool ohana. Our oldest son Jasper attended the preschool in 2022-2024, and our youngest son is currently enrolled.
