My name is Luz, and I am creating this GoFundMe on behalf of my husband, Jesus Avila. Jesus arrived in the United States at the age of nine, leaving behind his home in Coahuila, Mexico. Missing his roots, he started his own Mexican Folk Dance group at just 13 years old, channeling his love for culture and community into every performance. Over the next 55 years, Jesus dedicated his life to Mexican folkloric dance and art, always striving to give back to the country that welcomed him.
Twelve years ago, Jesus retired from dance. Afterward, he devoted himself to designing and creating large oil on canvas murals that tell the story and history of the United States of America. These works became his new passion, allowing him to continue honoring the country that embraced him when he needed it most.
On January 21st, 2026, a devastating fire broke out at the Walker’s Point Uhaul located on 1st Street in Milwaukee, WI, where Jesus stored his collection. The fire destroyed and damaged ten years’ worth of his work. To bring these paintings to life, Jesus made the difficult decision to part with his beloved folkloric dance group and many treasured costumes, investing the proceeds and a significant amount of his personal resources into creating the 28 oil on canvas pieces. These works, each 8x6 in size, depict the beauty, people, and history of some of the major cities of the United States. They are more than just canvases—they are a heartfelt tribute to the country that welcomed him, and a reflection of his journey as an artist and immigrant.
The cost to restore these paintings is significant, and I am reaching out for help to bring them back to life. Your support will allow Jesus to recover what was lost and continue sharing his art and gratitude with the world. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for considering a donation. Your kindness and generosity mean everything to us during this difficult time. Every bit of support brings us closer to restoring his work and moving forward.
