My name is Michelle Palmer, firstborn of twins from the district of Darliston in the parish of Westmoreland, Jamaica. My father’s property, Palmerland, is known to many people. My district was severely damaged by the destructive Category 5 Hurricane Melissa that wrecked parts of our country.
This devastation has left my family, relatives, friends, and community in shambles. Homes, churches, schools, businesses, and infrastructures were destroyed. The damage by this storm is not only deaths and destruction but also major psychological trauma on the children. I am a Licensed Master Social Worker, and it’s my social responsibility to be concerned about this very important need of my community.
I am making a heartfelt plea for your support to reach my community in this challenging time. My fellow community members need water, food, clothes, shelter, medical supplies, transportation, psychological support, and spiritual guidance to help them cope with this loss they have faced.
The toll of this devastation can be seen on the faces of my family and friends. Nowhere to sleep. Complete loss of their homes, children cannot return to school. I have not lost hope in our common humanity that each one of us will reach one.
