It is with a heavy heart that I am asking for help, for my son, Austin. On Saturday, August 24, Austin's house in Kaukauna, WI was destroyed by fire while he was at work. He just purchased his first home after serving in the Navy for four years, returning to the Fox Valley in the hopes of building a life for himself. Now, he has lost virtually everything he owns, aside from his car and the clothes he was wearing at work. The home was insured, so, hopefully, his insurance company steps up for him. While the house can be restored and some belongings replaced, there are things insurance just doesn't cover. He lost all of his military uniforms and mementoes, which can never be replaced. He has also lost personal mementoes from the first 25 years of his life. He's a wonderful young man, who is hard-working and fiercely independent. At 18 years of age, he quietly enlisted in the Navy, not even telling his mother or I that he was even considering entering the service. After serving four years, he came home, worked two jobs to save up to buy his first house, and did so on his own, without even telling us he had bought a house until he had done it! Like I said, he is fiercely independent. It is not in Austin's nature to ask for or even accept help, but I've stressed to him that there are people who care and are willing to help. He has no idea how long he will be out of his house, how long it will take the insurance company to help him, or even how much they will help with. He is still in a state of shock, and does not really know where he goes from here. Any assistance is greatly appreciated. Thank you.
