Alma(85 years) and Arnold(86 years) Evans of Attica have been taken advantage of by a local water mitigation contractor. In September of 2024, their furnace condensate line became plugged, causing their home, which they had built themselves, to partially flood. They did what they believed were the right steps and hired a licensed and insured contractor to help with the mess.
On September 13, 2024, the crew arrived and began demolition of their home. The crew extended the scope of their work far beyond any damaged areas of the home, including the living room, kitchen, and dining area of the lower level, with promises that the Evans family home would be returned to its former beauty. As of February 2025, almost 6 months after work had begun, the Evans family is living in nothing short of a nightmare.
They have been forced to retreat to the second floor of the home and must travel up and down the stairs numerous times a day, through trails of construction debris and drywall dust, to let their pets outside, do laundry, and bathe. Alma and Arnold are forced to use the lower level tub for their bathing needs as this is the only tub in the house they can safely use. The bathroom has had the electricity cut off to it since day one, also requiring them to bathe in the dark surrounded by construction debris.
Auto Owners Insurance Company has provided the Evans family with $53,000 to cover the expenses from the damage. The restoration company has taken all of those funds and left them in this mess. There have been attempts to get assistance from the insurance company, but they don't want to get involved. When they ask about when their home will be completed, they are told they are out of money and need to come up with more to complete the project. Currently, all of the appliances are damaged beyond repair and the refrigerator is infested with mold. They also threaten to sue them over breach of contract if they don't pay. In the meantime, they are forced to live in squalor and in fear of being wrongfully sued. Current estimates to complete the work are approximately $40,000.
We are asking the community for their support in getting the Evans family back to a normal life. If this fundraiser raises funds beyond what is needed for the Evans family, the remainder will be donated to the Lapeer Masonic Lodge #54 with directions it is to be used for families in similar circumstances and/or to support families in need of handicap access, wheelchair ramps, etc.
