"Everything is gone... everything... why is this happening to me?" These were the words my sister-in-law cried over the phone when I answered Friday morning. On Friday, December 16th, 2022, while she and my nieces and nephew were out of the house, within an hour of their departure, the apartment was completely engulfed in flames from an electrical fire in the walls.

I grabbed some clothes in a bag and rushed down to Yonkers. When I saw her, she was in shock on her neighbor's couch. We hugged and she sobbed asking me why this was happening to her and her family. I told her I did not know and this was not something anyone ever deserved to happen to them.

Let me tell you about her: She came to this country with one suitcase and has raised three incredible kids as a single mom. These kids have never once doubted how much she loves them and would do anything for them. As you can see in the photo above, she decorated that apartment with signs of the love she has for her family. She has endured hardships I cannot imagine many of us facing and come on the other side a kind and loving person.

Fortunately, she has renter's insurance so she's not in a situation that many others face. So why this campaign? Well, for one, people have been reaching out asking how they can help and donating money toward the things that insurance won't cover, will go a long way.

However, the real reason why I'm setting this up is I'm asking for people far and wide to yes, donate a few dollars, but really to send her words of support. I know that reading the messages as she goes through this hard and terrible time will help her keep pushing on. When she cried, it was a cry that only comes from deep in the soul. It shakes you to your core and is a sound you do not want to hear from a loved one.

I am so incredibly grateful to have them in my life and want to be able to do anything to bring comfort and joy to them.

"Lo he perdido todo... todo... ¿por qué me está pasando esto?" Estas fueron las palabras de mi cuñada, llorando desesperada, cuando contesté el teléfono el viernes por la mañana. El viernes 16 de diciembre de 2022, mientras ella y mis sobrinos estaban fuera de casa, en menos de una hora de su partida, el apartamento estaba completamente envuelto en llamas. Cogí algo de ropa en una bolsa y corrí a Yonkers. Cuando la vi, estaba conmocionada, en shock, sentada en el sofá de su vecino. Nos abrazamos y en medio de lágrimas me preguntaba, ¿por qué le estaba pasando esto a ella y a su familia? Le dije que no lo sabía y que nadie se merecía que le ocurriera algo así.

Déjenme que les hable de ella: Vino a este país con sólo una maleta y ha criado a tres hijos increíbles como madre soltera. Estos niños nunca han dudado, ni por un momento, cuanto ella los ama y saben que ella haría cualquier cosa por ellos. Como se puede ver en la foto de arriba, había decorado el apartamento con signos del amor que siente por su familia. Ella ha superado dificultades que son inimaginables para muchos de nosotros y ha salido del otro lado como una persona amable y cariñosa.

Afortunadamente, tiene un seguro de alquiler, así que no se encuentra en la situación a la que se enfrentan muchos otros. Entonces, ¿por qué esta campaña?
