Restore Dignity: Help Memorialize Paupers' Cemetery

About 30 years ago, I found out that my grandfather, Cecil Martin, was buried in a section of the Lakeside Cemetery in Port Huron, Michigan, commonly referred to as a Paupers' cemetery. For those of you that don’t know what a Paupers' cemetery is, it is an area reserved for those who could not afford a proper burial and are interred here in unmarked graves.

When I went back to the area during Covid, I found that the area was fenced in and locked. Through my research, I have found that there are approximately 350-400 people buried in this section of the cemetery, including many children and adults, some 2 and 3 in a plot. I am working with the city of Port Huron to make this area a place where family members can come and pay respect to their loved ones.

At this point, I am looking at purchasing a memorial bench and signage designating it as a cemetery. If you could find it in your heart to donate a few dollars, I would be very thankful. Let’s give these people the respect they deserve. Matthew 5:3 Blessed are the poor in spirit: for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
