Hello friends. My name is Don Stouder, and I am a retired first responder and trauma chaplain. I have built this Go Fund Me campaign because one of our own is in trouble, and they need our help.
Help Two Lifelong Public Servants Stay Safe in the Desert Heat
In the unforgiving climate of the Southern California desert, air conditioning isn’t a comfort—it’s a necessity. On August 27, 2025, Rick and Norma’s 37-year-old HVAC system finally gave out. After years of patchwork fixes, the verdict is clear: it must be replaced. But for two retired public servants living on fixed incomes, the cost is overwhelming—especially after catastrophic car repairs struck at the same time. Generous friends provided a one-room portable AC unit so they have had to stay in that one room whenever the temps go up, which is every day. And the approaching change of seasons is no help; the same HVAC system provides heat.
A Love Built on Service
Rick and Norma met while working as public safety dispatchers, united by a shared commitment to protecting others. They’ve now been married for 39 years, building a life rooted in service, sacrifice, and quiet resilience.
• Rick served six years in the U.S. Marines, then spent over 30 years in law enforcement and city service—including roles as a Police/Fire dispatcher, Law Enforcement Officer, and assistant to the City Manager.
• Norma dedicated 26 years to dispatching for multiple agencies, ensuring help reached those in crisis.
Because their agencies didn’t participate in federal tax programs, Rick and Norma are not eligible for Social Security. Their retirement income is fixed, and their medical needs are growing.
Health Challenges and Isolation
Rick lives with spinal injuries sustained while operating tanks in the Marines. Norma suffers from inoperable knee problems. Both require periodic medical visits, but their car—essential for medical care and daily life—recently suffered catastrophic mechanical failure, compounding their vulnerability. Already scarce funds had to be used for securing another vehicle.
Still Serving—Even in Retirement
Despite these hardships, Rick continues to give back. He volunteers as a board member for a local Amateur Radio Club and serves as Assistant Emergency Coordinator for the Amateur Radio Emergency Service (A.R.E.S.), supporting local agencies during disasters.
Why Your Help Matters
Rick and Norma aren’t asking for luxuries. They’re asking for safety, dignity, and relief from the brutal desert heat. Your donation will go directly toward replacing their broken air conditioner—restoring comfort and security to two people who spent their lives serving others. If we exceed our goal, additional funds will help lessen the bite from their transportation crisis and ensure they can continue accessing vital medical care.
Let’s come together to support those who’ve supported so many. Every dollar helps. Every share matters.
